Dynamic Design Intents Capture with Formal Ontology and Perdurants Object Concept for Collaborative Product Design
2016
Loss of design intents and related information throughout the lifecycle of products are common. Capturing design intents of an assembly, which include a temporal (dynamic) stages, is even harder. This research work aims to enhance the spatiotemporal mereotopology (STM) based ontology in tune with the contemporary efforts in this research domain. The main idea with such STM ontology is to capture dynamic design intents and develop an integrated data translation framework from Computer Aided Design (CAD) system to a visualization system. This integration framework is intended to enhance design sharing in a collaborative environment. In this paper, the framework is demonstrated with a simple m…
Towards criteria for sustainable process selection: On the modelling of pure subtractive versus additive/subtractive integrated manufacturing approac…
2017
Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes can be counted among the disruptive technologies that are capable of transforming conventional manufacturing routes. The ability to create complex geometries, the reduction in material scraps during manufacturing, and the light-weighting due to the think-additive redesign of the components represent the main points of strength of AM. However, for some applications (such as the production of metal components for the automotive and aerospace industries), the surface finishing and dimensional/geometrical part tolerancing that can be achieved via AM processes might not be adequate to satisfy the imposed product specifications, and finish machining operation…
Advances on mechanics, design engineering and manufacturing
2018
The theme of the present editorial is dedicated to the“Advances on Mechanics, Design Engineering and Manufac-turing” that emerge in different engineering and architecturalfields. The theme has been chosen as leitmotiv of a series ofevents that have been organized by three societies operatingin Italy, Spain and France, respectively: ADM (Associ-azione nazionale Disegno e Metodi dell’ingegneria indus-triale), INGEGRAF (Asociación Española de IngenieríaGráfica and AIP-PRIMECA (Ateliers Inter-établissementsde Productique—Pôles de Resources Informatiques pour laMECAnique). Since 2014, a series of JCM conferences havebeen organized. JCM is the acronym of “Joint Conference onMechanics, Design Engin…
A theoretical framework for product relationships description over space and time in integrated design
2016
ABSTRACTThis paper presents a novel qualitative description theory in the context of integrated design, which here incorporates assembly sequence planning in the early product design stages (also called assembly oriented design – AOD). Based on a literature review of current AOD approaches, product models and mereotopology-based theories, the authors introduce a promising mereotopological theory which enables the formal product relationships description in integrated design by introducing an emerging framework, four-dimensionalism (i.e. perdurantism in philosophy). The proposed efforts aim at providing a concrete basis for describing the evolution of spatial entities (i.e. product parts) an…
Mining customer requirements from online reviews: A product improvement perspective
2016
We propose a filtering model to predict helpfulness of reviews for product design. We provide a way to use the KANO model based on online reviews. We explore how to obtain insights from Big Data through knowledge-based view. Big data commerce has become an e-commerce trend. Learning how to extract valuable and real time insights from big data to drive smarter and more profitable business decisions is a main task of big data commerce. Using online reviews as an example, manufacturers have come to value how to select helpful online reviews and what can be learned from online reviews for new product development. In this research, we first proposed an automatic filtering model to predict the help…

A model for designing callable bonds and its solution using tabu search
1997
Abstract We formulate the problem of designing callable bonds as a non-linear, global, optimization problem. The data of the model are obtained from simulations of holding-period returns of a given bond design, which are used to compute a certainty equivalent return, viz., some target assets. The design specifications of the callable bond are then adjusted so that the certainty equivalent return is maximized. The resulting problem is multi-modal, and a tabu search procedure, implemented on a distributed network of workstations, is used to optimize the bond design. The model is compared with the classical portfolio immunization model, and the tabu search solution technique is compared with s…
Competition with targeted product design: Price, variety, and welfare
2018
Abstract We consider the price and welfare effects of competition in targeted product design, in the context of the Salop circle model. Changes in product design lead to demand rotations that set the stage for our analysis. With an exogenous number of firms, we show that the degree of targeted product design tends to increase with the number of firms. Moreover, under reasonable conditions, price-increasing competition takes place, for intermediate levels of the number of firms. This effect is associated with the possibility of lower consumer welfare. With endogenous firm entry, an interesting insight from our analysis is that in some situations an increase in market size or a technological …
Product development process in Spanish SMEs: an empirical research
2002
Rapid product development has been treated as a competitive strategy in a global market environment. It is essential to improve the product development process with the objective of reducing product development cycle time and hence to reach the market as quickly as possible. Large-scale companies have adopted new strategies and technologies to reduce the product development cycle time, taking into account various market and innovation barriers. However, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have not received adequate attention from researchers for their product development process. In this paper, an attempt has been made to analyze the critical success factors for the product development proc…
